Fashion is an industry full of exciting designs and highly creative designers. The world of fashion provides employment for thousands of people in a wide variety of jobs. Every fashion design that you see come down the runway has to go through a process that takes it from the designer’s sketch pad, to the manufacturer, to the racks in major department stores, and finally, into the hands of the consumer. There is the creative side to fashion, and then, there is the business side to fashion. This is where fashion merchandising enters the picture. 

It bridges the gap between the creation and business of fashion. There are a number of things that must be completed before the product is ready for the consumer. Many hands get involved with merchandising. Buyers, manufacturers, graphic artists, and sales people have a role to play in getting all of those great designs into the marketplace.

This opens up many exciting career opportunities for those, who love fashion. Buying is the first step in the business portion of the process. Once, the garments leave the runway the buyers meet with the designers they want to purchase. Buyers have a sense of what the trends are and what the public is looking for.

Manufacturing is also a very important part of the process. A process, which employs countless numbers of people, who work under different job descriptions. Sales people and manufacturers work closely together, preparing the product for distribution. The garments are produced, and advertising is created to get the word out to the public. Catalogs and anything else that needs to be printed are handle by the design team.

This includes creating spots in magazines, catalogs, newspapers, and the internet. The art departments of each areas plays a significant part in the advertising and promotion of the final product. Some jobs that are available include buyers, sales negotiators with manufacturers and those who supply goods and services, store managers, personnel to create displays inside the store, advertising, and marketing.

Highly creative people, who have a background in art and fashion, do the beautiful displays that are seen in the stores. Those in advertising working very closely with the marketing department.
