Electrical engineering studies start with two years of learning engineering principles, which include engineering design, mathematics and measurement precision, scientific techniques related to engineering and the tools used to design products. Education also includes the use of computer-aided drafting and design software, which is the standard for engineering design today. After understanding general engineering concepts, the last two years of education focuses on electrical circuitry and how it relates to engineering concepts to successfully design electrical products and systems. After four years of successful studies, a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is awarded.

Along with education, those interested in electrical engineering should have strong analytical and math skills. This discipline also requires creativity and an inquisitive nature to successfully design electrical systems and products. Electrical engineers should have strong communication skills, because they often oversee design projects and work with many other professionals to ensure they’re design is completed successfully.

Electrical engineers can work in a variety of industries and careers. While some design the controls of manufacturing equipment, others design wiring systems, power systems, radars and tracking systems, as well as detailed circuitry. As technology continues to advance, electrical engineering careers can combine other engineering disciplines to design new cutting-edge technology.
