Online Associates Degree

The associates degree is an undergraduate degree that usually requires a 60 semester credit hours to complete. The associates degree is broken down into general education, major specific education, and electives. It take most people about 4 semesters of 2 years of full time education to earn an associates degree (unlike a bachelor degree which usually requires 4 years to complete).

You can earn your associate degree at your local community or junior college. The diploma you receive upon completion of the degree indicates that you have a broad base in general education with special training in one specific area. An associate degree is usually earned in a specific vocational area such (such as medical assisting) or in liberal arts.

If you are interested in using your associates degree to get a job upon graduation you are better off to get an Associate of Applied Science degree since it is preferred over a liberal arts degree by most employers. An associate degree in liberal arts is a good degree if you are looking to earn a bachelors degree.

Types of Associates Degrees:

  • A.A. - "Associate of Arts" degree
This degree is designed to prepare students for a four-year college or university.
  • A.A.S. - "Associate of Applied Science" degree
Designed to prepare graduates for career entry or job advancement after 2 years of college study. AAS degrees may also transfer to 4 year colleges. A.A.S degrees may also be known by occupational specific titles such as Associate in Computer Technology, Associate in Business, etc.
  • A.S. - "Associate of Science" degree
Designed to transfer to a 4 year college or university.
  • Occupational Degree
Also referred to as "applied" degree programs, an occupational degree program at a two-year college is designed to prepare students to enter the workforce immediately following graduation. The primary function is career preparation but can be used to enter a 4 year university.
